‘structural resonance’ combines construction and art
Structural Resonance by Poh Sin Studio is an intricate ceiling installation suspended in an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, evoking the complex network of utility conduits and building infrastructure systems. Combining industrial engineering with contemporary art, the work captures a journey toward safety and assurance, as it draws inspiration from high-tech architecture where the influence of modern engineering and new technological paradigms is palpable. Structural expressionism is at the core of this work, conveying a language of strength and resilience through its robust yet elegant form.
It features a composition of rhythmic balance, with the center radial pattern serving as the focal point, and bold red structural elements converging and expanding outward in a dynamic, symmetrical flow. The prominent use of red throughout the piece also acts as a beacon of safety and action, mirroring the colour’s prevalence in construction machinery and safety devices like scaffolds and cranes.

poh sin studio unveils unseen beauty of mechanical systems
Structural Resonance’s vibrant colour emphasizes the importance of urgency and protection in the construction industry. For artist Pamela Tan, who heads Poh Sin Studio, the work embodies the dynamic interplay of form and purpose, as it invites viewers to contemplate the unseen beauty in mechanical and electrical systems, the lifelines of the modern built environment. The installation thus reflects the adaptive spirit of contemporary engineering, celebrating innovation and the perpetual evolution of construction techniques.
Measuring approximately 5.2 meters in width, 7.8 meters in length, and 0.7 meters in height, this steel structure is suspended 2.5 meters above the floor in a lounge area near the reception. Here, staff members, visitors, and clients gather or wait, with the installation serving as a striking focal point. Commissioned for Belden Advocates & Solicitors, a firm specializing in construction industry law, it aligns with their expertise and values. It stands as a powerful visual metaphor for the important intersection of law, engineering, and safety, reflecting the firm’s commitment to upholding the integrity and resilience of the construction industry.
