Star Bright Star Light by Hou de Sousa reinterprets Wish Trees

Star Bright Star Light by creative studio Hou de Sousa is an interactive public pavilion in New York City inspired by the cross-cultural tradition of Wish Trees. The installation invites visitors to tie ribbons representing their hopes and desires, with each added ribbon causing the pavilion’s fluffy, fluorescent winter coat to grow outward like a neon Chia Pet. This vibrant display showcases thousands of individual aspirations, collectively highlighting the universal hopes that connect us all.

The pavilion’s star-shaped perimeter creates open spaces perfect for exploring the wish ribbons, while its undulating ridge line rises and dips to offer views in and out of the structure. Lined with 1,200 colorful chains, the steel frame features over 75,000 individual links for tying personalized ribbons. Hou de Sousa‘s Star Bright Star Light stands at 140 Broadway in Downtown New York City.
